trailers

We’re going to stop talking about the old reveal trailer from 2014 since, in addition to being just a cutscene, it was made for a game that was being worked on by a completely different team. The actual trailer we want to see is the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 announcement trailer.

We start with some pre-rendered shots of a completely trashed living room overlooking a pool. Wine bottles, beer glasses, cigarettes, crushed cans, and other remnants of a good night’s sleep litter the floor. A hand reaches out and a man wakes up on the couch. He looks around, takes a drink and looks at himself in the mirror. Either he is quite tired or his bloodshot eyes imply that he is infected.

The man grabs a gun by the door, looks back at a scene of bloodied corpses that we weren’t shown earlier, and walks out into the street. Immediately, the zombies are drawn to him, which he counters by smashing his liquor bottle on the former’s head before striking and using his makeshift bayonet to cut down the crowd following him.

The background location changes as the man fights off more approaching zombies, first to a beach and then to a downtown area where he sets a group on fire by throwing his cigarette into a pool of spilled gas.

In the next scene, we are in a convenience store buying snacks, pills, and more alcohol. A legless zombie makes a futile attempt to attack, but our “hero” simply smashes it into a bloody mess by pulling a shelf on top of it.

Back in the original room, our protagonist relaxes on the couch only to find a single zombie stumbling around. Sighing, he reaches into his pocket to see what he has. He takes his single rifle round, loads it into his gun, and fires. It seems that this is not a normal bullet, as the zombie fully explodes when hit. Realizing the remote has no batteries, the man reluctantly gets up to go for a run, this time stopping at the closet to grab a katana.

On the street, greet a couple of survivors before moving on to the title.

As far as the story goes, we just know the basic setup for now.

In dead island 2, you’ll play as one of six characters in Los Angeles (make your joke about LA not being an island here), where the same zombie virus from the first game has devastated most of the population. The military has given up trying to eliminate the infection and has simply resorted to quarantining the entire city. Your character, however, is also infected, although for some reason you are able to resist turning into a zombie.

The game will focus on trying to survive, finding out what caused the outbreak and why you are somehow resistant to it, and finding out if you can help cure the outbreak. Pretty basic and uninspired for a zombie game, but hopefully the actual plot itself becomes more interesting.

how to play

not satisfied with bringing dead island 2 Coming back with a cinematic trailer, we also got a full gameplay trailer during Gamescom to prove that this game is, in fact, real.

After taking a look at the game’s beautiful but desolate locations, including collapsed streets and graffiti-covered tunnels, we jump into first-person perspective to see a man stick his head out through a boarded-up window.

After some weird cuts that seem to be part of the story, we get some montages where objects are stuffed into zombies’ heads, as well as punching, kicking, stabbing, and slashing others. You see thrown weapons, there are environmental hazards like electrical boxes and gas trucks being used, and there are also traditional firearms and hand-to-hand combat.

For weapons, we see some pistols, shotguns, SMGs, and assault rifles. The number of melee weapons seems much more expansive here, though it’s hard to tell exactly what each one is due to them swinging so quickly and burrowing into zombie skulls.

According to DeepSilver, dead island 2 it’s “the most intense, visceral, gory first-person experience possible,” and that certainly shows in the trailer, where all the gory details are on display.

Going up the count of the four from the original game, dead island 2 will allow you to select one of six characters. As in the first game, each character is essentially his own class with his own skill and dexterity, as well as voice lines and personalities. None of the characters, or what makes them unique, have been detailed yet.

multiplayer

It is almost mandatory that your zombie game, no matter what type it is, have cooperative mode. The first game had online-only co-op with up to four players, but dead island 2 seems to be narrowing it down a bit to a party of three. Being primarily an RPG at heart, where there are tons of quests, loot and sheer exploration to be done, having friends will certainly be a main incentive to play. However, many important questions remain to be answered.

First, Dead Island forced players to wait until completing a few hours of the game solo before opening co-op, and we don’t know if that will be the case here again. The first game also allowed cooperative players to play as the same characters. But the real questions are related to cross-play and progression. We don’t know if you’ll be able to play with friends on different platforms yet or how progress made in co-op will carry over to your single-player game or not.
