How do Ionic Traces work in the game?

Destiny 2 Season of Plunder ushered in the Arc 3.0 overhaul that has been talked about a lot in recent months. Of the many perks and buffs added to the game as part of this redesign, Ionic Traces is one of them.

Interestingly, creating Ionic Traces is something that warlocks using the Arc 3.0 subclass can inherently do, as long as they use the electrostatic mind aspect in Destiny 2. The Hunter and Titan classes need to equip the proper shards to successfully create this buff. .

Speaking of shards, now that the World’s First Raid race has concluded, all remaining bow shards have been unlocked. These can be picked up from Ikora Rey in the Tower in Destiny 2 Season of Plunder. Of all the shards, only Ion Spark and Discharge Spark can easily help create these ion footprints. Other fragments cannot.

For Spark of Ions to help create Ionic Traces, Guardians will have to continuously defeat shaken enemies. However, the discharge spark helps create these ion trails with the final blow of each arc weapon. Taking this into account, Spark of Discharge has more flexibility in terms of building diversity.

These ion footprints function as elemental wells. If a Guardian picks up an Ion Trail, he will receive an energy boost for all of his abilities. This is something elemental wells do as well.

While there are certain exotics in the game that pair well with these Ionic Traces, the overall utility of this buff is somewhat limited considering Elemental Well builds are still popular in the game.

The answer to this question depends entirely on a Guardian’s individual playstyle preference. The different playstyles offer a completely different feeling of combat. While creating ion trails may be a default option for warlocks with the electrostatic mind aspect, other classes may opt out of the shards these ion trails create.

As mentioned above, these Ionic Traces work very similarly to Elemental Wells in Destiny 2. However, if a Guardian has the Seeking Wells mod equipped, these Elemental Wells reach them automatically.

Under normal circumstances, Guardians will either have to relocate to collect these Ion Traces or they will have to stay very close to their enemies while fighting them in order to pick them up easily.
