LG Electronics’ latest TV can switch from a flat screen to a curved one and vice versa, all with the push of a button.
LG today unveiled the 42-inch OLED TV and its innovative folding concept ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin. At the touch of a button on a remote control, a user can transform the LG OLED Flex (model LX3) from a flat panel to a display with up to 900R curvature. The screen’s curvature can also be altered in 5% increments at 20 different levels.
LG is marketing the OLED Flex as its most customizable TV yet. The flexability makes it perfect for “immersive console, PC, and cloud gaming” alongside typical TV viewing, says LG.
The flexible display likely comes from LG Electronics’ sister company, LG Display. At CES 2020, LG Display showed off a similar concept, but with a 65-inch 4K OLED TV that could fold at the edges and switch between the two modes in about 5 seconds. It could also bend back and forth about 35,000 times. But at the time, it was unclear if the TV concept would ever become an actual product.
The LG OLED Flex indicates that LG Electronics may be ready to finally bring a flexible TV to market. But there is no information about the price or the release date. For now, LG plans to display the TV in Berlin; IFA takes place from September 2 to 6.
Along with the high-quality OLED screen, the flexible TV also boasts a response time of 0.1 milliseconds. LG adds: “LG OLED Flex’s display can be tilted up to 10 degrees or moved up to 5 degrees away from the user and has a height-adjustable stand, up or down by 140 millimeters, ensuring ergonomic comfort for those who like it. like to sit, and those who like to lie down.”
The company also built several gaming-focused features into the TV. “For example, they can adjust the size of the image on the screen according to their individual preferences or the genre of the game they are playing,” says LG. This means you can play a game that occupies the entire 42-inch space, or reduce the screen size to a 32-inch or 27-inch image, making it easy to view an entire gaming environment at a glance.
Players can also watch content from two different sources, allowing them to watch YouTube and play games at the same time. Additionally, the TV comes with built-in microphones, two 40W front-facing speakers, and can be connected to a headset, keyboard, or mouse through its USB ports.
