PlayStation VR 2 will arrive in early 2023

PlayStation has announced, out of the blue, that its next-gen PlayStation VR 2 Kit will arrive in early 2023.

The announcement came via PlayStation’s global social media accounts, including PlayStation AU.

And for now, that’s all we have. There are currently no pre-order dates and certainly no idea what the stock will look like when it arrives. One hopes that the PSVR 2 isn’t as hard to come by as the PlayStation 5. If it is, we may all be waiting until 2025 to get our hands on it.

The PlayStation VR 2 is Sony’s next step in capturing the virtual reality market on consoles. It successfully did this in the PS4 era with the original PSVR unit. However, it was a VR headset that felt like a proof of concept. Although it was quite comfortable and its motion tracking was solid for its time, the unit put old PlayStation Move controllers into service. These inputs eventually slowed the device down as VR technology developed around superior manual tracking and fine inputs.

Not this time, says Sony. As you can see from the hero image above, PlayStation VR has rebuilt its controllers. The new controls resemble those used by the Quest 2, HTC Vive, and Valve Index and should work similarly.

The displays used in the lenses are now a pair of Fresnel OLEDs capable of outputting 2000 x 2040 resolution per eye. That should help narrow down the ratio of the original PSVR significantly. There are also haptics on the earcups, so be prepared to get knocked around a bit. I’m interested in how that particular functionality will work because the last thing I need from a VR headset is a concussion.

The PlayStation VR 2 joins a ton of games crammed in the first quarter of 2023. It will be interesting to see what kind of waves it makes when Sony finally posts a confirmed release date. For now, we’re waiting for a pre-order date and word on what stock levels will be like for launch.
