‘Prey’ Creative Director Claims Bethesda Forced Them To Name The Game ‘Prey’

Raphaël Colantonio, Founder of Arkane Studios and 2017 Creative Director Preyhas claimed that Bethesda forced developers to link their game to existing intellectual property.

The first-person shooter was billed as a “creative reimagining” of the 2006 game of the same name but, according to Colantonia, that was never the developers’ intention.

Speaking to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, Colantonio said (via TechRadar) “I was a bit at odds with some of the managers about the decision to call prey, prey. That was very, very painful for me. I didn’t want to call this game Preyand I had to say that I wanted to do it anyway in front of the journalists.”

“I hate lying, and those are sales lies, not a personal lie, but I still felt bad,” he continued. “I had to support a message that I didn’t want. Not just me, no one on the team wanted to call this game Prey. Our game had nothing to do with Preybut it was like Prey [2006] in some way.”

He added: “I am grateful that a company gives me the means to make a game and trusts my ability with so many millions of dollars. But there is a bit of the artist, the creative side, that gets insulted when you say to this artist ‘Your game is going to be called Prey‘. You say, ‘I don’t think I should. I think it’s a mistake.’”

Colantonio even said that the decision to draw Prey to relatively unknown but pre-existing intellectual property was a business mistake. “I hate to be right on this one, but I was right in 10 different ways that this name should never have been the name of the game.”

“It was also a kick in the face for the original creators of PreyColantonio added. “I wanted to apologize to them many, many times. It was never our intention to ‘steal your IP’ and make it our own. It’s disgusting. That’s not what I wanted to do. So everyone lost, and [Prey’s] sales were horrible.

Shortly after the release of Prey, Colantonio abandoned Arkane. “I was like, ‘I have to go right now’ because I’m not in control of my own ship.”

In other news, Arkane developers have spoken about the sheer scale of red fall‘s open world, with one of its farms larger than Preythe whole map.
