- The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is put to the test in a new video from JerryRigEverything.
- Samsung’s latest flip phone resists the onslaught of dust and deliberate bending.
- However, the display on the Fold 4 doesn’t appear to be any more durable than its predecessor’s, despite Samsung’s claims to the contrary.
Since Samsung slimmed down the hinge and narrowed the bezels on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 compared to its predecessor, you might think it’s less durable than the Z Fold 3. A new durability test from JerryRigEverything proves otherwise.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has proven its worth against Zack Nelson’s harsh testing regimen. As usual, the routine includes scratch, fire and bend tests, which one of Samsung’s best folding phones withstood.
Like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the latest foldable device survived concerted flexing while open, thanks to its sturdy hinge. Nelson’s attempt to break the phone in half by folding it from behind was futile, unlike OnePlus’ flagship phones.
The test was made extra special from the regular torture tests when Nelson threw powder into the mix. The Fold 4 managed to remain functional despite an onslaught of dust and dirt, which is notable given that it lacks a dust protection rating. Despite being covered in sand and pebbles, the hinge still flexes smoothly and quietly, and the side-mounted fingerprint scanner works.
In the scratch test, the outer cover screen withstood Nelson’s razor blade until scratches began to manifest at level 6 on the Mohs scale, with deeper grooves at level 7. This was the same narrative. than the Fold 3, which features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. This means that the Plus version of the Fold 4 doesn’t do much to protect your screen.
While the outer screen resists scratches, the inner screen does not, which suffers from scratches at level 2. This is not surprising given that Gorilla Glass is inherently more durable than the UTG used on the phone’s inner screen. .
The Fold 3’s durability test returned the same results last year, indicating that the Fold 4 is no more durable than its predecessor. In announcing the latest foldable model, Samsung claimed that the main screen of the Fold 4 was 45% stronger than the previous model, although Nelson’s video does not seem to corroborate this claim.
That being said, Samsung has made significant progress in addressing the durability issues of the original Galaxy Z Fold in 2019, with the third iteration of the foldable phone sporting a super-tough build. Samsung says this year’s version of the foldable lineup is no different despite making minor design tweaks.
Samsung’s latest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, features an improved design, improved cameras, and a faster chipset. Users can take advantage of the internal and external screens in various ways thanks to the folding design.
