Announced in June, the Aya Neo Next is a portable gaming tablet running Windows 10, designed to compete with Valve’s Steam Deck. What Aya Neo Next has going for it on the Steam Deck, at least for Australian gamers, is that it will actually launch in Australia.

Launching here in August, the device comes in two flavors: Aya Neo Next serves as the standard edition and Aya Neo Next Pro, which comes with double the RAM and storage space. The Pro may be harder to come by in Australia, as local retailers seem to be favoring the standard model for now.

The Aya Neo Next replaces the previous 2021 model with a more ergonomic design and longer battery life. If it can get past an hour of battery life on the Steam Deck, I think we’ll all consider it a big hit.

One of the biggest value propositions of the Aya Neo Next is that, unlike the Steam Deck, this is a Windows tablet. This means that, like a normal PC, you can install not only Steam, but also Xbox, Epic, Origin, Ubisoft, and any others you like. This means that their selection of games, wide as they already are on Steam, is even wider than what the Deck can offer.

Where Steam Deck makes up some ground here is that Valve works with developers to create Steam Deck-certified versions of games that will run well on hardware. There is no such guarantee here. You’ll just have to play around with the settings until you can get your games running smoothly (again, like a regular PC).

As for its dimensions, according to Press Start’s Shannon, who was sent a unit for review, it’s a bit smaller in the hand than the Steam Deck.
